Tips and Tricks – June 2019

Tip #1 – Stop MS Office from correcting email addresses and web URL’s

It can be annoying when Word or Excel recognized email addresses and web address URL's as such, even highlighting them into links, but fails to omit them from spelling and grammar checks, forcing you to bypass them. This feature can be customized in Word and Excel 2016. To disable this behavior:

  • Click File->Options
  • Select Proofing on the left
  • Under the 'When correcting spelling in Microsoft Office programs' section, enable the option to ignore Internet and file addresses

Tip #2 - Recovering deleted items

Did you know that you may be able to retrieve a deleted item, even after it has been emptied from your Deleted Items folder?

In certain scenarios, depending on your mail provider and settings, this is possible!

In Outlook, click on deleted items

In the menu bar at the top, ensure the Home tab is selected and click on "Recover Deleted Items (From Server)"

A new window will open, displaying items that were deleted from your deleted items folder.

Not all deleted items remain here -- depending on your mail server settings you may only be able to recover 30 days of deleted items, for example.

Tip #3 - How to start Google Chrome in "Safe Mode"

Sometimes Google Chrome will experience issues and you will need to start it in "Safe Mode" to troubleshoot. Starting in "Safe Mode" starts Google Chrome without any add-ons or extensions. This is done by launching Google Chrome in Incognito Mode. To do this in Google Chrome click on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner and then click on "New incognito window", or use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl-Shift-N. Then see if the issue still occurs or Google Chrome works properly now. If it works properly that would indicate there is an issue with an add-on or extension which may have to be disabled or removed. Another benefit of Incognito mode is that it does not save your browsing history, cookies and site data or information entered in forms. You can browse privately in that other people who use your computer won’t see your activity. However, downloads and bookmarks will be saved. When you are done just close the window and open Google Chrome again.
